Any company that deals with moisture-sensitive goods or food products for export is required to adhere to specialized packaging standards. The most cost-effective way to meet this standard is to ship the goods on kiln-dried wooden pallets.
All wooden packaging materials used to export goods must meet International Standards of Phytosanitary Measure 15 (ISPM 15), which was developed under the auspices of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). This standard stipulates the need to treat all wooden materials of thicknesses greater than 6 mm in order to prevent the spread of diseases and pests carried in the wood.
Heat Treatment
To kill or halt the growth of mold and fungi, all wooden pallets must be heat-treated or fumigated. Heat treatment completely sterilizes the wood. For 30 minutes, the material is heated to a temperature of 56 degrees Celsius. Heating of the wood’s sap causes the timber to emerge from the treatment lighter, stronger, and stained.
Moisture Removal
Kiln drying reduces the moisture content of the wood. The pallets are stacked and heated inside large kilns until the excess moisture evaporates. It is more akin to a curing process than total sterilization. The timber used to make pallets does not emerge completely sterile from the process. Drying sessions can vary significantly.
TPPC Study
The varying moisture content of wooden pallets, as well as the fact that mould can survive in kiln-dried wood packaging materials, prompted the Timber Packaging and Pallet Confederation (TPPC), the UK’s pallet association, to commission an in-depth kiln-drying project to determine the best practice for this procedure.
